Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD):
The well-known AREDS study and other research indicates that taking nutritional supplements can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and slow the progression of the disease.
AREDS did not study bilberry, lutein or zeaxanthin anti-oxidants, but other studies are investigating these and other supplements.
For more information, contact the "National Eye Institute" at http://www.nei.nih.gov/amd
However, New research indicates that mega-dose vitamins could be doing more harm than good. Currently, the only supplements we are recommending are highly purified fish oil & lutein.
New studies show a reduction in AMD with taking highly purified fish oil products (see bottom of this page for recommended brand).
Cataracts:
Newly published research indicates that lutein and zeaxanthin antioxidants may reduce the risk of developing age-related cataracts.
Studies on human cells indicate that in fact high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin do help to protect the human lens from UV light (a major contributor of cataracts). However, since there is no direct blood supply to the lens inside the eye, we are not sure if we can get the antioxidants to the lens simply by ingesting them. More research needs to be done on this subject. In the meantime, a good pair of UV-blocking sunglasses is probably the best bet.
Dry Eye:
Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) have been proven to assist in dry eye as well as having many other benefits. Essential fatty acid Essential fatty acids cannot be produced by our bodies, so we need to ingest them. Essential fatty acid deficiencies are responsible for all sorts of inflammatory conditions ranging from allergies, asthma, heart disease, macular degeneration and dry eye disease. Sources of EFA's are flax seed oil and some fish oil, although there is overwhelming research that indicates that fish oil is much more bio-available than flaxseed oil.
It is reported that 83% of Americans are deficient in EFA's and are suffering from a whole host of health problems as a result.
Not all fish oils is created equal.

The best omega 3 source that we have found is "Life Guard - Dry Eye" formula by "Physician Recommended Nutriceuticals" (PRN).
Fish oil is made by "pressing" the fish, causing all the oil to come out along with many contaminants including mercury & PCB's (a cancer-causing agent banned in 1979 which has been found in many fish oil products).
In fact, many trusted brands of fish oil supplements are being sued for having toxic levels of PCB's in their product.
The companies being sued are: CVS Pharmacy, GNC, NOW Health Group, Omega Protein, Pharmavite, Rite Aid, Solar, and Twin Labs.
After the fish is pressed, ethyl alcohol is added to raise the boiling point of the oil allowing the manufacturer to "boil off" the impurities.
Most manufacturers stop here and encapsulate the oil with the ethyl alcohol still present.
PRN "Dry Eye Omega Benefits" is one of the few fish oils that has taken the extra step of removing the ethyl alcohol and returning it to its natural triglyceride (TG) form before encapsulating it.
"Dry Eye Omega Benefits" is also created in a pharmaceutical lab where other pharmaceutical grade medications are manufactured.
The production of "Dry Eye Omega Benefits" is regulated and monitored by the NSF http://nsf.org for purity and potency.
